  • An M.Sc., M.E. or M.Tech. and 4 years of related work.

“Related work” means things like running scientific instruments, testing samples, or managing a research lab.

What Will Help Your Chances?

IIT Kanpur will prefer people who have handled shared lab facilities on their own. It helps if you have used machines like:

  • FESEM (a microscope that shows surfaces at very high zoom)
  • XRD (shows the crystal structure of materials)
  • BET (measures surface area)
  • GC, GC-MS, LC-MS and GPC-MS (separate and identify chemicals)

Experience in fixing small machine problems, keeping logbooks, booking slots for users and dealing with service engineers also counts.

The notice does not mention an age limit or fee.

Salary Details

The pay scale is Rs. 38,800–3,200–96,400 a month. In simple words, pay starts from Rs. 38,800 and rises in steps of Rs. 3,200. Very strong candidates may get a higher starting pay, as per IIT Kanpur rules.

Selection Process

Merit Points and Exam Pattern

There is no exam. Your experience with instruments and lab management decides your chances.

How to Apply

  1. Update your CV. List every instrument you have used.
  2. Write a short cover letter on why you suit this role.
  3. Scan proof of your work experience.
  4. Email all of it to emkay@iitk.ac.in.

Tips for a Strong Application

  • Mention how many years you have used each instrument.
  • Give examples of problems you fixed or labs you organised.
  • Keep your cover letter to one page.

What a Normal Day Looks Like

In this job, you will start the day by checking that each instrument is working. Students and researchers will book time slots to test their samples, and you will run some tests yourself. You will record who used which machine, note any faults and call the service team when something needs repair. You will also keep track of supplies like gases, chemicals and sample holders.

It is a busy, practical role. If you enjoy working with machines and helping others with their research, it can be very rewarding.
